The government of South Sudan’s Jonglei state said it has banned all illegal multiple checkpoints used for profiteering following numerous public complaints.

The checkpoints had been set up on roads leading to the capital Bor from counties.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, the minister of information in Jonglei state, Atong Kuol Manyang said the ban will ease movement of traders with their goods.

“Checkpoint is for security reason and also serves as a source of revenue when taxes are collected. Because of many checkpoints that existed, it was difficult to control and monitor and that has led to the rise in commodity prices, “she explained.

Minister Atong pointed out that they only approved five checkpoints in Duk Pagak, Pajut, Anyidi, Bor South and Duk Padiet areas. “If a vehicle is stopped anywhere apart from these areas, then it is important to alert the government,” she said.

However, the state minister did not reveal measures against anyone who violates the ban.

Figures for the amount of people involved in the illegal activity in the state were not immediately available.
