Jonglei elders meet president Kiir over insecurity in Bor

A group of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) elders from South Sudan’s Jonglei state, on Wednesday, met President Salva Kiir Mayardit in Juba over growing insecurity following an attack in Bor County.

About 32 people were killed when attackers suspected to have been armed Murle youth from Greater Pibor raided Baidit area, an accusation Pibor youth vehemently denied. 

Deng Dau Malek an elder from Jonglei state told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday evening that they briefed the president on worsening insecurity in Jonglei. 

“We were a group of SPLM elders drawn from nine counties of Jonglei,” he said. “We discussed deteriorating insecurity which has resulted in deaths and loss of lives and which has caused a lot of movement of citizens between Jonglei state and GPAA. We also discussed administrative issues pertaining to the peace agreement.” 

Deng Dau, who also serves as the deputy foreign affairs minister, pointed out that the meeting was fruitful as it sought state intervention in tackling the growing insecurity ahead of elections. 

“We also discussed the humanitarian situation due to the floods in Jonglei and the question of IDPS and refugees because before elections there is a census and we need people to come back home,” he said.
