A High Court in Jonglei State on Monday sentenced five defendants to seven years in jail for killing three police officers in two separate incidents on the outskirts of Bor town last year.

In October 2018, three police officers were killed and two others injured in two separate revenge attacks carried out by local youth. The officers were on duty at the time when the incident happened. Seven youth were arrested in connection with the incident.

The President of the High Court in Jonglei, John Yel Aleu, told reporters that five of the seven suspects were found guilty of murder.

“Two others were set free after investigations. According to the customs of Dinka Bor, they have to pay 51 cows for each of the deceased and five cows for the injured officers,” Aleu said.

The judge further said those sentenced to seven years in jail include, Ayuen Ateny, Mangar Panchol, Makuach Akech, Akon Maler and Aleu Deng.

He pointed out that the convicts have two weeks to appeal the court ruling.
