A woman whose dog bit a 3-year-old toddler to death in Bor County, Jonglei State last year has been ordered by the High Court to pay blood compensation to the aggrieved family.
Speaking to reporters in Bor, Justice John Yel Aleu, the presiding judge, said: “We have the case of a dog which bit to death a 3-year-old child. Based on the evidence provided by the prosecutor, and the examination of the accused, the court found Adol Aluong Malual guilty under section 210 of the Penal Code Act, 2008. The convict has been asked to pay 25 head of cattle as blood compensation to the family of the deceased Nyiel Mayen Ayuen.”
According to the court official, the convict has been slapped with a fine of 75,000 SSP of which failure to pay will result in her being jailed for four months.
David Garang Goc of the Jonglei Civil Society Network welcomed the court ruling and called for the vaccination of all the dogs in the town.
For his part, John Makuei Alier, the Bor Municipality public health deputy director, said plans are underway to kill all the stray dogs in the town.
“There are more dogs in Bor now compared to the past years due to the last year’s floods. As the municipality, we have a plan to kill all the stray dogs in the town, he said.
Makuei also urged all those domesticating dogs to take their pets for vaccination and keep them confined in their compounds.
