Joda South checkpoint closed after gunmen attack

At least two people were killed and two people wounded in an attack by an armed group in Joda South checkpoint between Sudan and South Sudan last week, a local official said.

Chan Aluong, Executive Director in Renk County, told Radio Tamazuj that the checkpoint has been closed following the killing of people by suspected SPLA-IO rebels rebels last week.

The conflict-affected people at the Joda checkpoint fled southward to Geiger and Renk area, while some families proceeded to Sudanese territories due to insecurity, according to the official.

He further said Sudanese traders in the area returned back to Sudan. Aluong pointed to high prices of commodities in Renk after the checkpoint had been closed.

Several eyewitnesses confirmed that unknown gunmen in four Land Cruiser vehicles without number plates came and looted the area before shooting fire randomly in the area.

The attackers reportedly tied red ribbons on their heads.
