The Joint Military Ceasefire Commission (JMCC) on Tuesday delivered forms for registration and screening of SPLA-IO troops in Ayod County.
The body is made up of both government and opposition groups.
Riek Bim Top, a member of the Joint Military Ceasefire Commission, told reporters from Ayod County that he visited the SPLA-IO forces at Mogok cantonment site to deliver forms for the registration process.
“The screening of the forces is progressing well… I want to assure the public that the registration and screening are going on very well,” Bim said.
The military official announced that the registration process has also started in the Panyikang area of Fashoda State. “We are happy that the screening program is going on well without obstacles,” he said.
For his part, the commander of the SPLA-IO’s Division 7, James Diang confirmed that they had received the forms from the JMCC.
Diang reiterated their commitment to the implementation of the peace agreement.
Last month, the parties to the peace deal resolved that at least 50% of the 83,000 necessary unified forces should be trained and deployed before the end of September.
A face-to-face meeting between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar earlier this month resolved to find solutions to pending issues holding up the formation of a transitional government proposed for 12 November.
