A leading member of the Jieng Council of Elders (JCE) has tendered his resignation to the leadership of the advisory group on Thursday, February 23.

Dinka Council of Elders is a group of mostly veteran politicians who advise President Salva Kiir on political issues.

In a letter addressed to the leadership of the Council, Lewis Anei Madut Kuendit, who had been working as the secretary general of the Jieng Council of Elders, resigned from his position.

Anei claimed that he wants to focus on a new political party he has formed recently. ”I am presenting you this resignation from my assignment as Secretary General of the JCE. This is to give me opportunity to focus on my new Republican Party of South Sudan which I and a group of South Sudanese are forming these days,” he wrote.

However, Anei promised to assist the Council on cultural matters as a member of the Dinka tribe.

Last week, Lewis Anei broke away from South Sudan’s ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) loyal to President Kiir and formed a new political party.
