JEM rebels warn Sudanese authorities against executing its members

The Justice and Equality Movement rebel group yesterday warned the Sudanese government against executing its members who have been transferred to solitary confinement at Khartoum's Kober Prison.

JEM chief negotiator Ahmed Mohammed Tugod told Radio Tamazuj yesterday they were informed that seven of their members who held as “prisoners of war” in Khartoum military detentions were sent yesterday morning to Kober.

He said the prisoners been captured three years ago during fighting in North Darfur and were sentenced to death in Khartoum.

Ahmed said the Khartoum authorities have deported them to Kobar prison earlier this month and urged the concerned organizations of human rights to pursue the matter, warning the government of negative impact in case they followed through with any death penalty.

“This morning they are at solitary penalty site. We considered that move to be against international laws of POWs," he said. "They were captured during one of the clashes with Sudan government in Darfur region, so they have ful right to be treated as prisoners of war. They are not supposed to send to court."
