JEM criticizes AUHIP mediator over slow progress in peace process

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) has criticized the African Union mediation team for failing to make any breakthrough in the peace process in Sudan.

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) has criticized the African Union mediation team for failing to make any breakthrough in the peace process in Sudan.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Ahmed Tugud Lisan, JEM chief negotiator at peace talks, said chief mediator of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP), Thabo Mbeki has not made any sufficient progress in the peace process.

“Mbeki has been in charge of the African Union mediation since 2009 and now we are in 2017, if we are trying to evaluate his work throughout these years, we would not get any achievement. Mbeki is very slow and that has given the government a credit,” said Tutud.

Tugud pointed out that his rebel group has not yet received any invitation from the African Union mediation team for a new round of peace talks.

The AUHIP chief mediator Thabo Mbeki is scheduled to visit Khartoum in March to meet with government officials and opposition parties over a new round of peace talks.

Reportedly, Mbeki is also conducting consultations with armed oppositions groups and international partners on the peace process in the country.
