JEM and SLM delegates arrive in Qatar for talks

Delegations from the Justice and Equality Movement and Sudan Liberation Movement have arrived in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Monday for talks with the Qatar mediation, which brokered a peace deal previously between the Sudanese government and Darfur’s Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM).

The deal, known as the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur, was spurned by some of Darfur’s largest rebel factions. UNAMID says that the ongoing two-day meeting now in Doha is aimed at exploring the possibility of the two movements joining the Doha Document, which was deliberately left open-ended to allow for signatories at a later time.

According to a press release by SLM-MM, a delegation led by their leader Minni Minawi traveled to Doha for talks with Qatar mediator. Minawi said their visit is for making consultations about the vision of the two movements about a comprehensive and fair solution to the Sudanese problem, and Darfur in particular and to unify international efforts to create conducive environment for the peace process.

The meeting is also atended by UNAMID Joint Special Representative and Joint Chief Mediator, Martin Uhomoibhi. Consultations also involve the Deputy Prime Minister of Qatar, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, and Gibril Ibrahim of the Justice and Equality Movement.
