Japan International Volunteer Center has trained 50 nursery school teachers in Yida Refugee Camp.

Colina Ernesto Afjan, a nursery school supervisor, said that the training held over 15 days at the ‘child-friendly space’ in Block 5 benefited 50 teachers.

The training included information about upbringing of children and health issues, including the dangers of HIV/AIDS and prevention of malaria, said Mohaned Khamis Kuwa, a teacher who attended the workshop.

“I’m ready to take care of these kids after attending this training,” said another participant, Mubarik Kuwa. “I learned a lot of things about child development including psychology and health issues.”

According to Colina, nursery schools in Yida Camp face shortages of well-trained teachers, books, and other learning materials.

She said that some toys and other materials had been given by the organization Non-Violent Peace Force as part of their ‘child-friendly spaces’ program.
