The Government of Japan has provided USD 12.9 million for a new cross-sectoral assistance package to South Sudan, in partnership with international organizations, under its Supplementary Budget for FY 2024-2025.
A press release from the Japanese Embassy extended to Radio Tamazuj on Monday said that while the assistance aims to provide emergency support for the people of South Sudan and alleviate humanitarian situations, including food security, the Government of Japan especially remains hopeful that such aid will encourage the recipient country and its people to achieve self-reliant and sustainable development.
“Moreover, Japan’s assistance will contribute to the implementation of the peace agreement and the upcoming elections through its partnership with RJMEC, CTSAMVM, IGAD, and UNDP,” the statement reads. “The Government and the people of Japan have been supporting South Sudan since before independence and will continue to be a committed partner in various sectors including agriculture, water, health and sanitation, education and food security, as well as in the areas of peacebuilding and governance, which contribute to South Sudan’s transition efforts.”
The statement added: “We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our call that peace and stability are key to achieving sustainable economic growth in South Sudan.”
The projects under Japan’s Supplementary Budget for FY 2024-2025 in South Sudan include:

• UNDP: Strengthening Resilience & Stability and Creating an Enabling Environment for Inclusive Participation in the Electoral Process [USD750,000], Addressing the acute needs of climate-induced displacement with HDP Nexus/Early Recovery approach by scaling up climate fund [USD730,000] (*including other target countries)
• UNICEF: Provision of urgent life-saving integrated health and education basic services to flood-affected and displaced populations [USD1,350,000]
• UNWOMEN: Enhancing Resilience of Women and Girls in Transit, and IDP Sites in Upper Nile State [USD750,000]
• UNHCR: Protection and emergency assistance to refugees and asylum-seekers in South Sudan [USD1,500,000]
• WFP: Emergency food and nutrition assistance addressing food insecurity of vulnerable crisis-affected populations in South Sudan [USD1,500,000]
• UNMAS: Capacity enhancement of the National Mine Action Authority for effective coordination of mine action in South Sudan [USD300,000]
