Japan extends UNMISS contribution

The Japanese State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Ryosei Akazawa told the South Sudan government that it plans to extend its contribution of personnel to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan for an additional six months, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Japanese government, the country contributes 401 members of an engineering unit and three staff officers.

Akazawa told Foreign Affairs Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin that Japan wanted to help South Sudan improve its infrastructure once it achieves peace.

Benjamin urged the Japanese contingent to focus on states that are currently peaceful to implement development projects.
