The editor-in-chief of Juba Monitor has been released from prison this afternoon ahead of her trial, which has been scheduled for next week.
Anna Nimiriano was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly defying a Juba court order to suspend operations of the Juba Monitor newspaper.
On 12 April, a high court suspended activities of Juba Monitor over alleged malpractices until a final court ruling. The court also suspended the activities of Grand Media Africa firm, which runs the independent newspaper.
This came after the family of late Alfred Taban, founder of the independent newspaper, filed a lawsuit against the management on claims of malpractices.
Lazarus Legu, the newspaper’s legal adviser, told Radio Tamazuj this evening that the editor-in-chief was released from jail on Friday afternoon pending trial.
“She [Anna Nimiriano] has been released. There will be a court hearing on 25 April. Also, the case of the newspaper will continue next week,” Lazarus said.
According to the lawyer, the management had complied with the court order to suspend operations of the Juba Monitor newspaper until a final court ruling.
