At least 30 Italian citizens have left South Sudan following an outbreak of violence in the capital, according to a statement by Italy’s foreign ministry today.
“This morning an airplane of the Italian Air Force took off from the capital of South Sudan with on board 30 Italian citizens who have decided to leave Juba following the recent events,” reads the statement.
The Italians will be accommodated in Italy’s military base in Djibouti and subsequently follow on to their final destinations.
“On board of the plane… are also European Union citizens who asked for help to leave the Country,” adds the statement.
The operation was carried out by Italy’s Crisis Management Unit in coordination with governments of other EU countries.
