The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recently renovated Abyei Teaching Hospital in the contested area of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan, a local official said.
Nyanawut Mayen Kuol, Minister of Health in Abyei area told Radio Tamazuj that the IOM handed over the facility to the ministry of health on Sunday.
“The project was implemented by the IOM with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The handing over ceremony was attended by government officials, chiefs and organizations,” she said.
Kuol commended the efforts by the IOM in maintaining the main health facility in the area, saying the hospital was ready to receive patients.
However, the minister said the health facility does not have the capacity to offer good healthcare services to citizens due to lack of doctors and medical equipment. “We held a series of meetings with several organizations operating in the area so that they support the hospital,” she said.
