IOM providing medical aid to Renk displaced

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has set up a mobile clinic in Renk County to provide health services to an estimated 13,000 people displaced people in the border area between Sudan and South Sudan.

In a situation report dated 13 May, IOM said that it deployed a medical team to Wonthou area to help the displaced people and also dispatched a large consignment of drugs on 8 May to supply the team.

The aid agency is also the main primary health care provider in Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile state, where the most common deadly illnesses include respiratory infections, malaria and watery diarrhea

About 12,000 people are sheltering at the UN protection site in Malakal where an IOM health team is working.

Health workers in Malakal are working on community-level health education focusing on prevention of malaria and waterborne diseases, as well as training on HIV counseling and testing.

IOM personnel are also preparing sanitation services for an anticipated influx of displaced people to Melut, a town south of Renk. According to the same bulletin, efforts are underway to improve clean water supply at a UN-protected site in Melut.

“Eight elevated, deslugable latrines have been constructed with the aim of averting the risk of waterborne diseases during the peak rainy season. Hygiene promotion activities continue at the PoC focusing primarily on solid waste management and good hygiene practices,” stated the report.
