A prison police officer affiliated to the SPLA-IO was on Saturday killed by unknown gunmen within the opposition-controlled 'Sobat State', located in eastern Upper Nile.
The officer was identified as Deng Chuol Mayen.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday, the opposition-appointed governor for 'Sobat State', General James Banak Riang confirmed the incident. He further said Capt. Deng Chuol was shot dead by unknown assailants in the area of Mandeng.
“The incident took place at around 9:30 pm, and we are still working to identify the perpetrators,” Banak said.
The senior opposition official further said authorities are looking into the matter and have already launched investigations to identify the culprits and the motive behind the incident.
General Banak condemned the killing of the prison police officer.
