Interim Lakes state governor rallies against IGAD deal

Matur Chut Dhuol, the caretaker governor of Lakes state, told a rally that President Salva Kiir would not sign any document that went against the will of the people of South Sudan. Dhuol was speaking at a rally last week in Rumbek’s Freedom Square.

The interim governor held a meeting with President Kiir before he traveled to Addis Ababa earlier this week to discuss the latest peace deal proposed by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development. Kiir left without signing the document and asked for 15 more days to consider its contents.

Dhuol said the IGAD-plus proposal is dividing the people of South Sudan and will not be signed unless some articles are amended, though he didn’t specify which ones. He then called on the citizens of Rumbek to “be ready for anything” that undermines the nation.

The rally was organized by members of the state’s civil society organizations.
