At least 10 people were killed and four injured in clashes involving two rival communities in Akobo County of Jonglei State on Tuesday, officials said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Gatwec Reat, the Akobo County commissioner, said the incident involving some members of Chiengwanjang and Chiengwuor started as a disagreement between two young men in the Deng-Jok area on Tuesday.
“10 people were killed and four others injured. The majority were killed in the crossfire as they tried to escape when the two were fighting,” he said.
Commissioner Reat blamed the incident on the armament of the local youth and called for the implementation of the security arrangements under the 2018 deal to foster security in the country.
For his part, Joseph Mayen Akoon, the state police commissioner, claimed calm had returned to the area after the local authorities intervened since Wednesday.
