At least five people were killed and one wounded during intercommunal fighting in Unity State’s Guit County on Sunday, a local official has said.
Guit County Commissioner Kaway Chany Buor told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that five people were killed on the spot in Kuac village between two clans following a case of elopement.
“I came now to Kuac village where the two sections of Thiengbeliu and Thiengyier fought each other,” he said. “I heard that the cause of fighting between the two clans was related to elopement and the girl was impregnated by a man from the Thiengyier clan.”
After visiting Kuac village following the heavy clashes on Sunday, Commissioner Chany said, “The general security situation is now calm and normal in Kuac village.”
He said security forces are in Kuac village to ease tensions and avoid further clashes from erupting.
Chany urged both clans to exercise restraint and peacefully resolve the matter.
