Insecurity threatens continuation of Amiet market in Abyei

Local residents in the disputed territory of Abyei have complained about increasing incidents of carjacking, killings and thefts at Amiet market.

The shared market was established last year to sustain peace between the Ngok Dinka and Misseriya tribes in the area.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, several local residents said a driver was attacked and stabbed to death at the joint Amieth market in northern Abyei last week. They added that two vehicles were also stolen last year.

The drivers complained that nothing was done to investigate the incident and recover the vehicles. They pointed out that such incidents may lead to the closure of the common market.

For his part, the chairperson of the peace committee from Ngok Dinka, Nyol Pagot Deng, said the committee is aware of the incidents, promising that they will continue to hold talks with the Misseriya tribe for compensation.
