The Director General of the Western Bahr el Ghazal State Ministry of Health said insecurity has prevented a meningitis vaccination campaign from reaching children in rural Wau county.

The Director General of the Western Bahr el Ghazal State Ministry of Health said insecurity has prevented a meningitis vaccination campaign from reaching children in rural Wau county.

Dr James Okello spoke in Wau town at the launch of the campaign to vaccinate children in the state against deadly meningitis disease.

In his speech, Okello said the campaign will target only Wau town and Jur River county. There has been recent fighting in rural parts of Wau county between the SPLA and armed groups said to be aligned with the SPLA-In Opposition.

Okello said the campaign is administering a new vaccine which protects children against meningitis for ten years. The previous vaccine only lasted for three years.

The leading doctor explained that the new vaccine will be delivered to children in 26 African countries.

He noted that the campaign is carried out by the World Health Organization and UNICEF in collaboration with the National Ministry of Health.
