The Indian government has pledged to donate artificial limbs to at least 500 people in South Sudan’s Jubek State, an official has said.
Peter Ibra, the orthopaedic centre director at the state ministry of gender, said on Tuesday that the Indian embassy in Juba will supply artificial limbs to amputees and people with special needs.
“The two counterparts are willing and have agreed to supply 500 artificial limbs to South Sudanese amputees affected by the war, accidents among other diseases provided they are amputees. This is a great offer from the Indian government to our people,” said Ibra.
He added, “We are very happy with this initiative, the governor has approved the project to continue in his state and they are going to use one of our facilities which is an orthopaedic workshop centre under the Jubek state ministry of gender, child and social welfare.”
Ibra pointed out that the project is a pilot one and will spread to the other states.
The official noted that the registration process is currently underway and appealed to people with special needs to register at the orthopaedic workshop centre.
“We call upon patients with orthopaedic complications to come for registration so that doctors fix their prosthetic limbs,” stressed Ibra.
