Increase in fistula cases among women in South Sudan

A member of women's monthly forum in South Sudan, Betty Sunday said there is an increase in fistula cases among women.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Sunday said women in South Sudan are suffering from early marriage and were raped during the war.

She said there are increases in fistula cases among women in the country due to early marriage and lack of awareness.

She also noted that the preliminary statistics of fistula cases among women is 50% to 65%.

Sunday said they have registered 90 cases of rape during the conflict. However, other estimates say thousands of women were raped in the war.

She further called on the transitional government of national unity to help women and girls who lost their husbands and fathers in the conflict.

The transitional government is meant to prioritize needs for families of war victims and war widows according to the peace agreement.
