Increase in Aweil attacks due to no police patrols, local chief says

A lack of police patrolling on the streets of Aweil is partially to blame for the increase in nighttime attacks on civilians, a local chief told Radio Tamazuj.

Sultan Atak Kiir Dut of Aweil town said that three people were killed last weekend from attacks in the area, including one woman.

"The situation is bad and the police night patrol that used to patrol the main city stop operating because of money," Kiir said, and added that there has been no money for two months.

Kiir also blamed the economic crises for the increased attacks, which make it more difficult for youths to meet their needs.

The lack of police patrol is due to a logistical problem, but police are expected to resume their duties, according to Aweil State Police Commissioner Major General Elias Kosta.

"The police patrols have been hampered because of financial constraints but as from today night there will be police patrol. It is our duty and responsibility to provide security and protection to our citizens” Kosta said.
