A man who worked as a bus driver was shot dead by an unknown killer in Jonglei on Saturday, while two others were wounded in the attack, the motive for which is unknown.

The victim, an Ethiopian by nationality, was driving a public transport car from Juba to Bor on Saturday morning when the car came under attack.

The incident occurred between Bang-Achorot and Panwel at exactly Maliithoor at Jonglei State’s border with Central Equatoria.

Nhial Majak Nhial, the mayor of Bor town, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that the driver was killed on the spot and another was injured, though he did not know whether the injured victim was a passenger or the conductor of the car.

A source who was traveling on a separate truck behind the car that was attacked said he spoke with one of the wounded passengers.

“When I asked the wounded person about who shot at them, he said they are suspected to be rebels because the attackers did not come near to the car but he just saw them running away,” said the traveler.

The identity of the attackers is unknown. People in Bor speculated that they could be raiders from a pastoralist tribe, or a defected soldier.

A source from Bor police told Sudan Tribune said that the alleged attackers were seen wearing the green uniforms of the national army (SPLA), which suggests the attacker could be either an SPLA or SPLA-IO (defected) soldiers.

But the Bor mayor speaking to Radio Tamazuj declined to speculate about the identity of the attackers, saying it was a matter for the state authorities to investigate.
