On Saturday, a horrifying incident unfolded in Manyang Ngok Payam, Tonj South County, resulting in the tragic deaths of a husband and his pregnant wife. The authorities of Warrap state have reported that the couple was shot dead while they were sleeping.
Marco Agor, the Commissioner of Tonj South County, confirmed the incident to Radio Tamazuj on Sunday. The deliberate nature of the killing has raised concerns, prompting immediate action from the authorities.
Commissioner Agor stated that the incident occurred on the 9th of this month and the suspected assailants are believed to be from Auruot Payam.
In response, the authorities have been in communication with Cueibet County authorities to initiate a search for the suspects. While there is no existing conflict between Tonj South of Warrap State and Cueibet County of Lakes State, it seems that armed youth from the neighbouring communities have been causing disturbances.
Commissioner Agor clarified that the motive behind this tragic event was not a personal dispute between the suspects and the victims. Instead, it appears to be linked to a separate incident that took place on the 6th of June. At that time, six criminals were spotted in Kunyja, Tonj South County.
These armed youths raided eight cows, leading the owners to pursue them into Cueibet County. A confrontation ensued, resulting in the death of one of the raiders. The remaining criminals managed to escape, taking one cow with them. However, the owners were able to recover the rest of their livestock.
Confirming the incident, William Wol, the Information Minister of Warrap state, expressed his grief over the incident. He disclosed that the suspected armed youth from Cueibet County were responsible for the killings and fled the scene. The Warrap State authorities have already reached out to Lakes State leaders, awaiting further updates on whether the suspects have been apprehended.
When contacted, Lakes State Information Minister William Koji said he has been in touch with the commissioner of Cueibet County over the incident.
“Yes, I have asked the commissioner of Cueibet whom his people have been suspected. He said he got the same complaint from the commissioner of Tonj South and he is still trying to verify who are those who left Cuiebet County and committed that crime on the side of Tonj South,” Koji said.
“On Monday, a major operation will be carried out and if it is confirmed that those people are from Cuiebet County, then they will be brought to book,” he added.
