Hundreds living in Aweil streets after rains

Hundreds of citizens at Naivasha, New Site and Makuach Awet are living in the streets and open spaces because of rains, amid humanitarian conditions described by the authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal as horrible.

Deng Ayom, head of the infrastructure committee of the Legislative Assembly in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, following a visit by his committee to those affected by the rain, said that the condition of people in Naivasha, New Site and Makuach Awet is very difficult under the continuous heavy rains with the increase of diseases among them.

Deng Ayom added that these people remained in the streets without shelters for a couple of weeks by now after their houses were damaged by the rain.

Mr. Ayom also stated that the reason is the absence of drainage in the area, adding that the rain is steady without adequate drainage systems, and he expressed his fears of the rate of diseases increasing this fall with the lack of full health care, while living standard deteriorates in the absence of humanitarian organizations.

Deng called for the authorities and organizations to deliver humanitarian aid, food, tents and tarpaulins for shelter, and prepare for building drainage for the area so that the citizens can live their normal lives.
