Humanitarians are working to lengthen the runway at Rubkona Airfield in order to improve relief operations in the Unity state capital of Bentiu.
The UN’s humanitarian wing OCHA said that $4.7 million are needed for the runway epansion project.
“The additional runway capacity will assist aid operations for all partners in the Bentiu area,” said OCHA in its weekly situation report, available for download below.
OCHA said that mine clearance teams are surveying the airfield to remove unexploded ordnance as part of efforts to extend the runway.
Separately, OCHA declared some roads leading to Unity as free of mines.
“The Mayom to Torabeid road was verified as free of mines. Mayom Junction was also verified as free of mines and there has also been no evidence of mines on the Mayom-Abiemnom road,” OCHA said, but noted that Mine Action teams still face difficulties due to insecurity and restrictions on their movement.
