South Sudan’s football team beat Malawi 2-0 today to finish at the top of the CECAFA Group C and advance to the next stage of the tournament. The surprise win comes as the country struggles to emerge from a nearly two year civil war.
Brights Star have won three matches of their last six matches including against Equatorial Guinea, Djibouti and today Malawi. They tied the other two – against Sudan and Mauritania – and lost once, also against Mauritania.
South Sudan now leads Group C with 7 points and followed by Malawi with 6 points.
The match today featured a dramatic last minute goal scored by Bruno Martinez in the 92nd minute. James Joseph Saeed scored the other goal in the 8th minute.
