Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with state authorities have launched the construction of a honey production center in Wulu county of Lakes State.
The groundbreaking ceremony by the UN agency and the ministries of Food and Agriculture, Cooperatives and Rural Development, Animal Resource and Fisheries and Tourism took place at Domuloto Payam on Thursday.
Rumbek FAO head of office Hannington Sebaduka told Radio Tamazuj that the facility was targeting processing at least 15 tons of honey per a season.
“We are looking to mobilize minimum 500 beekeepers from Domuloto, Bargel, Wulu and even northern parts of Western Equatoria, but the key players and beneficiaries are going to be the people of Domuloto, who should at least be able to serve 70% of this facility,” he said.
He said the facility was a result of FAO working in Wulu County in the shea butter sector for some time.
Elizabeth Momu Agum thanked FAO for the initiative that had created a training opportunity for the Wulu residents.
Domuloto youth representative John Angek Bilal said the project was the first manufacturing company to come to the payam.
Domuloto Payam Deputy Paramount Chief Moses Bilal Kulang recounted offering the land for the honey factory to help open up Wulu County.
He said people from Juba and Wau, or even Nairobi, Kenya or Khartoum, Sudan, could now come to buy the honey produced in Domuloto Payam.
