Authorities in the Ruweng Administrative Area say thousands of people have been affected by torrential rains and floods that hit the area last week.
Miakol Makwach, the Director General in Ruweng’s information ministry told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the area experienced heavy rains last week, destroying some 200 homes.
“About 200 homes have been destroyed in the areas of Gueng-Elak and Abushok and the greater Abienhom area forcing people to move to higher ground,” he said.
Makwach added that crops have also been destroyed by floods and have worsened the living conditions in the area.
“The floods covered all crops and this has led to a rise in commodity prices in the markets amid a lack of commodities,” he stated.
Moreover, the local official revealed that there is a high prevalence of water-borne diseases indicating that the health facilities are overwhelmed with the number of patients.
He appealed to aid organizations and the national government to intervene and support the affected communities in Ruweng.
