High prices hit Malakal in Upper Nile

Food prices increased significantly in Malakal, the capital town of Upper Nile in South Sudan. The closed border with Sudan and impassable roads aggravate the already-high pricing situation of basic commodities. A sack of flour is 340 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), rice 180 SSP, sugar 450 SSP, 50 kg sacks of Egyptian beans are 350 SSP, and a bucket of oil is 260SSP. Sudan has imposed a state of emergency on its border states with the South, outlawing all trade with the new republic.
