Food prices increased significantly in Malakal, the capital town of Upper Nile in South Sudan. The closed border with Sudan and impassable roads aggravate the already-high pricing situation of basic commodities.
A sack of flour is 340 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), rice 180 SSP, sugar 450 SSP, 50 kg sacks of Egyptian beans are 350 SSP, and a bucket of oil is 260SSP.
Sudan has imposed a state of emergency on its border states with the South, outlawing all trade with the new republic.
