High-level diplomatic meeting on South Sudan peace agreement in Addis Ababa

Diplomats of East African nations, the United States, United Kingdom, UN, Norway and others met in the Ethiopian capital on Monday to discuss support for South Sudan’s peace agreement signed in August.

Diplomats of East African nations, the United States, United Kingdom, UN, Norway and others met in the Ethiopian capital on Monday to discuss support for South Sudan’s peace agreement signed in August.

According to the African Union, their ad hoc representative for South Sudan, former Malian president Alpha Oumar Konare, held consultations with the IGAD, AU, UN, EU, US and UK.

The AU Peace and Security Department stated on its Facebook page today that Konare has urged the workshop participants to support the African-led South Sudan peace process.

The Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui addressed the event, as did the UNMISS chief Ellen Loej and Ethiopia’s ambassador as a representative of IGAD, among others.

Chergui was quoted as saying that the signing of the peace agreement last August marked a “significant milestone” but “this is only the first step towards lasting peace in South Sudan.”

Neither the AU nor other participants have yet made press statements about the outcome of the workshop.
