A herdsman was killed in a road ambush in Nyirol County of Jonglei State on Friday, officials said.
James Bol Makuey, the county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend that the deceased, identified as Gai Kier, was returning from a grazing site with a colleague when they were ambushed on Friday afternoon.
“The deceased and another herdsman were returning from a site in the Thol area where they took cattle for grazing when they were ambushed on a road,” Bol said. “Gai Kier was killed on the spot and the other person escaped unhurt.”
He added that no cattle were raided in the incident.
Brig. Gen. John Deng, the county police inspector, and Biel Jiek Lual, the county information director, also confirmed the incident and said suspected cattle herders could have been involved in the attack.
