A cattle keeper was killed and about 500 head of cattle stolen in the latest raid in Jonglei State’s Duk County by armed assailants suspected to have come from the Greater Pbor Administrative Area (GPAA) on Friday evening, authorities said.
County Commissioner Peter Latjor Chuol told Radio Tamazuj at the weekend that the attack in the Duk village of Dorok occurred in the evening while the cattle were being escorted home after grazing.
“On Friday at 4 p.m., some Murle bandits attacked and killed a herdsman in Dorok of Duk Padiet Payam and went away with 500 cows,” he said.
The cunty commissioner said attempts by local youth to have the stolen animals recovered were futile.
“Our local youth have been pursuing the attackers since Friday to try to recover the stolen animals without success,” he said. “They have now returned home without anything. We appeal to the GPAA government to recover the cattle.”
For his part, Abraham Kelang, the GPAA Information minister, said they are not aware of the attack in Duk County.
