At least one herdsman was killed, two others injured and several heads of cattle raided in an attack carried out by a group of armed men in Uror County, Jonglei state on Thursday, officials said.
Machot Gatluak Kenyjak, the county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj that the animals were grazing at the outskirts of the county headquarters, Yuai town when the attack happened.
“During the fire exchange, we lost a herdsman and two others were injured. About 7,000 cows were raided. Our youth pursued them and managed to recover 2,000 cows,” he said.
Peter Dak Wiluoth, an administrator in Yuai, said the youth are still pursuing the attackers in a bid to recover the stolen animals. He accused armed Murle youth of carrying out the raid.
But the Greater Pibor Administrative Area information minister Jay Adingora Alual said he was not aware of the raid.
“I am not officially informed about the incident. However, as a government, we are committed to peace and we will keep monitoring the situation,” he said.
