A herdsman was killed and 18 heads of cattle stolen during a raid carried out by armed bandits in Uror County of Jonglei State on Wednesday, local officials said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Tang Chatim, the county commissioner, said the incident occurred when suspected cattle raiders attacked men herding their livestock in Panyok village on Thursday morning.
“At 9 am, while the cows were being taken for grazing. Some cattle raiders attacked the young men who were herding the cows at the Koat area in Panyok village of Pieri Payam. After a brief fight, they overran the local youth, killing a man identified as Tut Chuol. They also made away with 18 cows," he said.
The county commissioner said the local youth have pursued the attackers to recover the stolen animals.
Uror County Police Inspector Lt. Col. Gatbel Machar said no arrest was made in connection with the incident as the attackers escaped to the bush.
“Those attackers escaped with all the 18 cows. We tried to pursue them but we were unsuccessful as they escaped to the bush,” he said.
The county police inspector however said the county is calm despite the incident.
