Herders given 7 days to move cattle from Kwajok town

Authorities in Gogrial State have given those who keep cattle in the city one week to take them outside of the town or face detention if their animals are found damaging other people’s gardens.

Authorities in Gogrial State have given those who keep cattle in the city one week to take them outside of the town or face detention if their animals are found damaging other people’s gardens.

The order aims to prevent problems between farmers and cattle herders. It was announced last month by Kuajok municipality but some people have been reported to still keep cattle in their compounds in the city.

“I don’t know actually what has happened because before I went to Juba I made it very clear that I don’t want cattle within the city but when I returned from Juba, I have seen cows still loitering around. Is it because these cows don’t eat your crops?” asked Abraham Gum Makuac, the governor of the state over local media on Saturday.

Gum added, “Now that you won’t want to take your cows outside the city then let me repeat it to you that I don’t cows here in the city and with this I have given you only seven days and I want the town mayor to follow this.”

He urged farmers to hold the owners of cattle responsible if they cause any destruction to their crops adding that their cows should be taken to any nearby police station.
