Thousands of families were left homeless and in need of humanitarian aid after heavy rains which lasted for more than eight hours on Monday and Tuesday left a trail of destruction in Dugul, Sunun, and Shaigiya and Shaigiya North neighborhoods in Al Nahood town of Sudan's West Kordofan state.
Al Nuhood Locality commissioner Rt. Brigadier General Saleh Saleh Al-Zain issued a state of emergency and appealed to local, national and international humanitarian organisations to provide aid to those affected.
One of the residents Bakri Hassan al-Bakri told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that more than 5,000 homes were destroyed. He added that 7,000 families have been registered by local authorities saying, “They are living in an open area under tragic humanitarian conditions.”
Another citizen, Omar Hamid, claimed that 8 people have gone missing since the rains began and their whereabouts are not known.
Meanwhile, the state Director General in the health ministry Dr. Yousif Rabeh Makki said humanitarian organizations have expressed willingness to intervene. He noted that the organisations will team up with line ministries to visit and offer assistance to those affected.
