Hundreds of people are without assistance in the town of Aweil after heavy rains damaged houses and properties on Wednesday, officials and residents said.
Elizabeth Nyanut Angok, the deputy mayor of Aweil town, told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that they assessed the damage and the needs of the displaced families.
Angok said more than 200 homes collapsed and at least 7,000 displaced people moved to higher ground. “The situation is terrible and has caused huge losses to the citizens because Aweil town is a low-lying land,” she said.
She pointed out that the floods forced some of the families to live in makeshift shelters along roadsides, which are located at a higher ground.
The municipal official says that no one was hurt but there is a looming dire humanitarian situation due to the large number of displaced people.
Residents of Deng Nhial, Naivasha, Nhomlaau, Gabat, and Maper Chuei neighborhoods suffered heavy losses following the heavy downpour.
Abuk Kur, whose house was damaged by the torrential rain, called on the government to dig canals to control the floods. “The heavy rains started at 3 am and destroyed my home,” she said.
Lual Deng, another resident of Aweil town, said the heavy rains that lasted for seven hours destroyed his properties and left him homeless.
Residents linked the floods to poor drainage.
