At least 14 people were killed by floods caused by heavy rains in Manaloor County of South Sudan’s Tonj state this month, a local official said.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj Monday, the county commissioner, Paul Mangong said the area experienced heavy rains in the first week of August, which destroyed many houses and government installations.

He said 1,213 houses and a number of government installations were destroyed while thousands of people were displaced in Banthuk area.

“Flooding is too much in my county; it has displaced many people from their homes and are now on streets. So far, 1, 213 households have been destroyed and the situation is worst,” Mangong said.

The commissioner decried the humanitarian situation, saying people live in bushes without food, medicines, and shelter.

He added, “Malaria cases have increased and this has increased deaths. There is no organization that is assisting”.

Mangong urged humanitarian agencies to visit his county and rescue the flood-stricken families.
