The authorities in Lafon County in Eastern Equatoria State have said they are investigating the killing of a medical officer in charge of the Longiro health centre in the Lopit West area.
On Wednesday, Abel Livio was shot and killed by a colleague identified only as Lowor, a nutrition assistant at the health centre.
Martin Ojok, the executive director of the Lopit corridor, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that the killer surrendered himself to the authorities.
“A person who works at the health centre was killed in Haba on Wednesday by his colleague called Lowor who works in the nutrition department,” he said. “We do not know why this happened but the suspect has surrendered himself to the government in Longiro.”
The official said he was worried that the local medical facility was fast running short of staff after the incident.
“I do not know what to do because the deceased was the one who supervises all the health centres in western Lopit,” he said. “I do not know what their problem was and now there is a very big gap left. So, am asking the government to bring in two more staff to replace the late and the suspect.”
Another health worker, Simon Peter, who witnessed the shooting, said the suspect killed his boss without a clear reason.
“The guy (Lowor) who shot Livio came and found the deceased and some other people seated at his (Lowor’s) home and greeted everyone but refused to greet Livio who he asked to leave his home,” he explained. “So, he (Lowor) went and picked the gun and met the late Livio on the road and shot him dead.”
