A primary school headmaster in Eastern Lakes State has abandoned his teaching profession for tailoring saying teaching can no longer provide for his family, amidst a biting national economic crunch.
The former head teacher of Comboni ALP Primary School, Martin Riak Telar, told Radio Tamazuj at Yirol Market that he was forced to revert to tailoring to meet his daily needs, saying a teacher’s salary which rarely comes cannot meet his family’s needs
“I am now working in the market because of the economic situation. So I decided to go back to what I used to do when I was a student. One should not depend on one source of income; you have to do other things. Because salaries do not come on time, they take a long time to come. So am sewing clothes so that I can get a daily income,” he said.
Telar also called on the government to establish institutions that would train the youth to be self-reliant.
“I will encourage the youth who have talents, to pursue them. I also call on the state government to bring organizations that can train youth on entrepreneurship skills so that they can create employment for themselves and be self-sufficient,” he added.
Telar said many of the young people in the state who are idlers can become productive once trained to be self-reliant.
