Hague court to broadcast trial of LRA commander in Uganda

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has announced that the trial for confirmation of charges brought against a former Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel senior commander Dominic Ongwen will be relayed live on local television and radio stations.

According to a report by The Monitor, the said places where proceedings will be relayed live on television include Odek, Barlonyo, Abok, Lukodi and Pajule. The report said there will also be radio talk shows on Mega FM in Gulu, Luo FM in Pader and Unity FM in Lira as part of the court's outreach strategy.

Ongwen is expected to re-appear before the court at The Hague in the Netherlands on 21 January.

Mr Ongwen, who surrendered early last year in Central African Republic, appeared at the ICC pre-trial chamber before Judge Ekaterina Trendafilova in January the same year on seven counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Ongwen, 34, defected from the LRA in December 2014 and handed himself over to the Seleka rebels who control swathes of the north and east of the Central African Republic. Seleka then transferred him to US Special Operations Forces, who transferred him to the International Criminal Court in January 2015.

Ongwen was among five senior commanders of the guerrilla movement indicted by the global court for war crimes and crimes against humanity in 2005.
