A group of gunmen took over an immigration office on South Sudan’s border with Congo in Lasu Payam of Yei River County on Saturday and abducted three police and stole money from the office.
Sources said the gunmen stole two sacks full of money. The money belonged to a petrol station company but had been taken into custody by immigration officers.
In the same attack, dozens of automatic weapons were also taken and three police men were taken hostages.
An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity told Radio Tamazuj that the security situation in the area still remains unsafe.
“Three policemen guarding the offices were taken alive including guns. The security in the area is not all that good as I speak to you now,” said the area resident.
Immigration officials could not be reached immediately to comment on the matter.
In a recent visit to Yei County, Vice President James Wani Igga called on people who have gone to the bush to lay down their arms and return home and concentrate on the full implementation of the peace agreement.
“Life in the bush is never easy; we had tried it some years ago during the liberation struggle for the independence of South Sudan. I want to make an appeal that please peace has come let’s come home and concentrate on the implementation of the peace agreement,” said Igga.
