Tension is high in Uror County of Jonglei State after one person was on Monday injured in a cattle raid, in which hundreds of animals were also stolen.
Peter Mabil, the Secretary General of the defunct Bieh State, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the incident occurred when gunmen attacked herdsmen in Pamay village.
“Three cattle camps were raided by a large number of Murle youth. 600 cows were recovered while over 4,000 cows are still missing,” he said.
According to the local official, fighting continued until Tuesday as local youth pursued the gunmen to recover the stolen animals.
“There are no further details because the youth are still following their cows. They are heading towards the greater Pibor [administrative] area,” he explained.
Joseph Mayen Akoon, the state police commissioner, confirmed the incident.
Radio Tamazuj could not reach Pibor officials to comment on the matter.
Communities of the greater Jonglei state have for long been wrangling leading to cattle raids and child abductions.
