At least 50 head of cattle were rustled by armed assailants from traders on the outskirts of Juba County’s Mogiri town along the Juba-Bor Highway on Tuesday evening, authorities said.
The cattle traders were taking their livestock to Juba for sale.
Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) Information Minister Oleyo Akwer Nyalus told Radio Tamazuj that one of the suspected cattle thieves was killed after the traders fired at them in defense.
“Our traders who had left Pibor for Juba to sell their cattle were attacked at Mogiri. Some 100 cattle were taken but 50 were later recovered after the thieves were pursued,” he said.
The minister said the identity of the assailants had not been established.
“No one knows the attackers, but they moved towards Mangalla town through the bushes and they were armed,” he said.
The Minister condemned the raid and urged all armed actors to desist from attacking business people.
