At least two civilians were killed in two separate attacks carried out by unknown gunmen along the Yei-Lasu road on Saturday, a local official said on Monday.

Otogo county commissioner Richard Lugala confirmed the incident to Radio Tamazuj saying the two attacks took place at Abegi village.

“On Saturday, Some people boarded a commercial vehicles travelling to Lasu market and when they reached Abegi, they were ambushed by armed groups and one person was killed,” Lugala said.

“A motorcycle operator was also shot and killed shortly before the attack on the commercial vehicle,” he added.

Lugala identified the two victims as Michael Lumori, a community health worker and Sebit, a motorcycle operator.

The local official pointed out that the relevant authorities are yet to ascertain the identities of the attackers.

Separately, Commissioner Lugala said 13 civilians were abducted, tortured and all their property looted while going to Morsak market last week by unknown attackers. Lugala added that the abductees were released after several hours.

Earlier, the Bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Yei said that the security situation on the western part of Yei River State has never been stable for the last two months.
